Hello, Jake! I really enjoyed this talk. As you know, the topic of “secular religion” is something I also think about.

One thing I was pondering at the end of the talk was how often Christianity has and does become a secular religion itself… with the end goal being something we “get” from God to enrich ourselves, rather than something transcendent that helps us to transcend ourselves/ego and to open our eyes to others. In a consumerist culture, the point so often seems to be to sell the faith as something potentially enriching for us and our families. I think transcendence-beyond-self is ultimately deeply enriching and heart-filling, but it’s hard to sell. So American Christianity is transformed into one more commodity.

Thanks for giving me a lot to think about.

Hi Tricia! I do know that about you and I’m a huge fan of your work. You are spot on about secular religion in the pews. In fact I’m coming at this in my next Convention address. Would love to figure out a way to discuss with you. Thanks for all your terrific stuff

Oh, I'm so glad you've shared this talk. That's deep and yet I was able to follow it through the way you explained it - and not only my mind but my heart also - agreed. That's beautiful, truly loving, gracious and respectful. And extremely well explained, even for me from a conservative evangelical background.. so I'm like.. that's awesome!

Thank you, Liz! You’ve been reading some pretty heavy hitters lately. I think I’m a bench warmer for that bunch, but I’m glad you’re still reading my stuff after all these years. Continued Lenten blessings my friend
