This made me think of my parents and cleaning out their house after mum died, yes all houses have the smell of those who live there.

The rest of the post made me feel good, thank you for this

My brother is now in what's billed as "rehab" for a number of health problems, but it's probably simply nursing care for the remainder of his life, because he is really not even trying to get up and move around again. The last time I was in the apartment where he was living, it did indeed stink--an overwhelming stench of stale cigarette smoke in a space with unopened windows--so your words took me there, and I wept. My brother--well, it's a long story of ups and downs, and now he's just dwindling, and I don't live close enough to see him often--if I honestly wanted to, and I'll admit it's painful when I do. It's comforting to think that when *now* is a mess, Jesus loves us even if we do stink one way or another, and there is a time beyond this time when we'll all be washed clean. Thank you for your words--and Happy Birthday!

Mary, I saddened to hear about your brother's situation. I can tell that it saddens you too. As you've said, our faith is a deep comfort in the messiness of this life. His love sustains me. Thanks for the birthday wishes and blessings to you

Andrew's remark made me tear up. I remember my granddad's room smelling like old books and documents. Also I'm reminded that I need to start cleaning out stuff in my house! (And Happy BD! I'm still older than you!)

Thanks, Nancy! And, yes, you are still older than I am. So I will show you due respect. Bless you friend

I've loved all your books, Bishop Jake, and this may be the passage that touches me deepest. I remember reading it not long after my dear Joe died. Thank you for all these years of sharing your wisdom, comfort, and love. Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday Jake. 🎂. Sorry I couldn’t get you a real cake. The reason was the fire services said NO FIRE PERMIT, too many candles!

Thanks Ken. I would hate to be a fire hazard!
