Hi Aussie Jo! Lent and Mardi Gras are connected. Mardi gras is literally fat Tuesday in French, and refers to the celebration preceding the penitential season of Lent on Ash Wednesday. I'll start with Lent. In churches that follow a liturgical calendar Lent is the 40 day season whose purpose is to prepare for the celebration of the resurrection on Easter Day. During Lent many take on additional practices to deepen our spirituality: prayer, reflection, fasting, almsgiving, study, and repentance. On Ash Wednesday we remember that we are mortal (remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return). That puts us in mind of our radical dependence upon God in this life and the next. In some places Mardi Gras is extended into a season sometimes referred to as Carnival. I'll stop there. Feel free to ask any questions if you would like.
